Chain tension | |
You can easily check the right chain tension. Therefor you move the chain up and down under the bail. When you can move the chain about 2cm you have the right tension. Note that wrong tension causes damage to the chain, chain ring and gear bevel. Encounting the wrong tension means to correct it!!! First release the axle nut. On both sides of the axle you see metal eccenters discs. The numbers from 1 to 10 are printed on that discs. At the same time the radius of that discs increases. 1 smalles radius - 10 maximum radius. For lowering the chain's tension you can rotate the eccenter discs to a lower number. Increasing the tension means to rotate the discs the other way round. Be aware that you position both discs exactly the same way. So when you need number 6 of the left eccenter be sure to rotate the right eccenter to number 6, too. Otherwise your rear wheel won't be in alignment. This can be dangerous to you, your bike and others!!! By the way you directly should use some chain lube. You can find some product in the link section. Be sure to oil the chain after riding through rain again. |
Check coolant | |
In driving direction under the left side's covering you find the compensation tank for the coolant. There are two marks for lowest and maximum level. Of course the level of coolant should be between both labels. Fill in coolant when the level is under minimum. You can use an injection to remove to much liquid. Make sure that you use the same coolant that is already in the engine and cooling system. You can differentiate the fluid by their colour. When you mix different colour this may cause damage to the engine. You should also check the cooler itself. You find it on the left side near the suspension fork. Be careful when the engine is still at operating temperature!! There can be much pressure so that hot cooling fluid can splash out of the cooler. |
Oil level | |
Generally a red lamp in the cockpit shows when a low level of oil is reached. But check the level manually more often. For example you won't notice a low level when the lamp is broken. Driving an engine without oiling is the best way to get it broken down rapidly. To check the level just look at the oil tank, wich is found on the right side of the front suspension fork (just the opposite position then the cooler). When the level is getting down you have to refill 2-stroke Oil. For this release the screw of the blocking metal part. After that you can reach the cover of the tank itself. When filling in oil be careful not to waste any oil to the environment. |
DT Washing | |
General be very careful when cleaning the bike with a high pressure cleaner. When you spray off the wheel bearings it may cause damage to them. I've experienced a burst rear wheel bearing at the speed of 100 km/h. The whole bike starts to choke from left to right. Luckily I could slow down the bike without falling. This will not ever happen to me again!!! Because the Yamaha DT is almost an hard enduro bike you probably will use its advantages in off-road terrain. Often the consequence is a very dirty bike and you need to clean the bike. You can get many good cleaning fluids. For example there are liquids which you can spray on the bike. Then wait several minutes and hose down the bike. This is a good first step to get the dogged dirt off. A general car cleaner (e.g. Car shampoo etc.) is useful, too. You could apply such cleaners in the second step ;)) Now you should use more specific tools to clean the bike. Perhaps you know about Armor All, which is a product for cleaning plastic parts. Even old accrued plastic will seem to be new again. Look in the links for more information. |
